Not in a way trials can show yet. CBD calms inflammation signals in lab and animal studies. But a 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials in people found its effects on blood inflammation markers were "inconsistent, often trivial." Trials in arthritis, colitis and healthy adults mostly saw no change in CRP or pain.
Why CBD looks so good in the lab
CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound from the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it does not make you high. It is sold in edibles, oils and skin creams. Much of its reputation for calming inflammation comes from the lab. In cells and animals, CBD acts on several of the body's inflammation switches, with names like NF-kB and NLRP3. When a 2025 meta-analysis pooled studies in animal models of Alzheimer's disease, it found that CBD "significantly and consistently" lowered markers of brain inflammation in those animals, including IL-6. IL-6 is a signal the body sends when inflammation is switched on. Animal studies of Crohn's disease, a bowel disease, have also shown less inflammation.
That is a real finding. It is also a mouse finding. The same Alzheimer's review found the human data "insufficient to substantiate efficacy." A dose that calms a dish of cells does not tell you what a capsule does in a person.
Is CBD anti-inflammatory in people?
This is where the story gets quieter. A 2025 meta-analysis, a study that pools the results of many others, gathered randomized trials of CBD and THC that measured inflammation markers in the blood.
Current trial evidence shows inconsistent, often trivial effects on blood inflammation markers. From a 2025 meta-analysis in Int J Mol Sci
Thirteen studies qualified. For four markers, including IL-6 and TNF-alpha, the pooled results leaned a hair in CBD's favor. But every one was "trivial and imprecise," and none was clearly different from placebo. The authors' summary: current trial evidence shows "inconsistent, often trivial effects." Some single trials did report drops, mostly in people with heavy exposure or an existing disease.
A second, larger review in 2026 looked at 46 studies of cannabis and cannabinoid use. In surveys of users, cannabis use was linked to higher levels of both inflammation-raising and inflammation-calming markers at the same time. The authors read that as a mixed immune effect, not a clean shift in one direction.
What trials in real patients measured
The single trials tell the same story, one group at a time.
Healthy adults. In an 8-week trial, 48 people took 50 mg of CBD or a placebo every day. CRP did not differ between the groups at the end. CRP (C-reactive protein) is a blood marker the liver makes when inflammation is up.
Arthritis. In a 12-week trial in Denmark, 136 people with hand osteoarthritis or psoriatic arthritis took 20 to 30 mg of CBD or a placebo daily. The pain gap between groups was 0.23 points on a 100-point scale. That is close to nothing. About 22% of the CBD group and 21% of the placebo group had a big drop in pain.
Ulcerative colitis. In a 10-week trial of 60 adults, the CBD group took capsules that also held some THC. Remission came for 7 of 29 on CBD and 8 of 31 on placebo. CRP was similar in both groups. Every one of the 29 people on CBD had a side effect, mostly mild, such as dizziness.
Crohn's disease. In a small trial of a 5% CBD oil, 4 of 10 people reached remission, compared with 3 of 9 on placebo. Reviewers rated the evidence very low certainty.
Parkinson's disease. In a 12-week trial of 60 patients, about 26 mg a day of CBD did not change inflammation markers compared with placebo.
The safety catch
CBD is often sold as gentle. A 2025 trial tested that at a dose in the range people take from store products. It gave 201 healthy adults CBD or a placebo for 28 days. Liver enzymes rose to more than 3 times the normal limit in 8 people on CBD (5.6%) and in no one on placebo. Seven of them met the cutoff for possible drug-induced liver injury.
The product itself is a second unknown. A US lab tested 516 CBD products against their labels. Only 42% held within 10% of the CBD the label claimed. Forty percent held less. In the 121 edible products tested, lead turned up in 42%.

you have liver disease; you take any prescription medicine; you have an inflammatory condition such as arthritis, colitis or Crohn's disease; or you notice dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain while taking CBD.

The bottom line
The mice were real, and so were the calmer cells. But when researchers took CBD out of the lab and into people with arthritis, colitis, Parkinson's or no disease at all, the markers mostly stayed put. Pain did too. The gap between the two is the whole story. For now, CBD is a promising idea for inflammation, not a proven tool. Spend your effort where the human trials point, and save CBD for whatever else you and your doctor think it might help.
Common questions
Does CBD treat inflammation?
Trials have not shown that it does. A 2025 meta-analysis of thirteen studies found CBD's effects on blood inflammation markers were trivial and imprecise. In ulcerative colitis, CRP was similar on CBD and placebo after 10 weeks, and reviewers said no firm conclusions can be drawn. Calmer inflammation in lab animals has not carried over to people so far.
What does the best CBD inflammation study show?
The strongest single answer comes from pooled trials. A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials rated the evidence for IL-8 and TNF-alpha as moderate certainty, and the effects on both were small and not clearly real. An 8-week trial in 48 healthy adults found no change in CRP with 50 mg of CBD a day.
Does CBD oil cause inflammation?
There is no clear sign that it does. In a 2026 review, trials of CBD hinted at a small rise in markers that drive inflammation, but the result was uncertain. Cannabis users in surveys had higher levels of both kinds of markers. The clearer safety signal is the liver: enzyme rises in 8 of 201 trial volunteers, all on CBD.
Does CBD help arthritis pain?
In the best trial so far, no. Among 136 people with hand osteoarthritis or psoriatic arthritis, 12 weeks of daily CBD eased pain no more than a placebo. Sleep, mood and anxiety scores did not improve either.
