It may help a little, and how much depends on the type. In rheumatoid arthritis, 7 small trials found less pain on anti-inflammatory diets, but the evidence was very low quality. In knee osteoarthritis, losing at least 7% of body weight is the clearest food-related path to less pain.
Is arthritis an inflammatory disease?
"Arthritis" covers many conditions, and inflammation plays a different part in each. Gout is a common type of inflammatory arthritis. Crystals of urate, a waste product, build up in the joints. That leads to pain and swelling. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory disease that reaches beyond the joints.
That matters for diet. A food pattern that eases one type may do little for another. So we take them one at a time.
One term first. A meta-analysis pools the results of many studies to find the overall pattern.
What the biggest review of diet and arthritis found
In 2021, a task force from EULAR, Europe's main rheumatology group, reviewed diet in 7 joint and muscle diseases. The team pulled together 24 systematic reviews and 150 original studies. They found 83 different diet exposures had been tested, mostly in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Pain relief may come once people with knee osteoarthritis lose at least 7% of their body weight. From a 2025 meta-analysis in Osteoarthritis Cartilage
The verdict was modest. A few single nutrients had moderate evidence of small effects, such as omega-3 fats in rheumatoid arthritis. But high-level evidence that any single food change makes a meaningful difference was missing.
So the task force did not pick a winning diet. It said people with these diseases should eat a healthy, balanced diet, and work with their care team to reach and keep a healthy weight.
Does an anti-inflammatory diet help rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis has the most diet trials, and the pain results lean one way. A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 7 randomized trials with 326 people. It tested Mediterranean, vegetarian, vegan and ketogenic diets. Pain was 9.22 mm lower on a 10 cm pain line than on ordinary diets.
That is a small shift. The authors also rated every trial at high risk of bias, and the overall evidence very low.
Plant-based diets tell a similar story. A 2025 meta-analysis of 7 trials, published between 1979 and 2023, found vegetarian and vegan diets gave a small improvement in pain. Disease activity and daily function did not improve. The certainty was rated low for every outcome.
Inflammation markers may move more than pain does. A 2020 meta-analysis of 7 trials with 468 people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis found low-inflammatory diets improved blood markers of inflammation and weight after 2 to 4 months. Joint pain and physical function did not change in a clear way. Again, every result was rated very low quality.
What about osteoarthritis?
For osteoarthritis, the food story is mostly about weight. A 2025 network meta-analysis compared many treatments at once. It looked at 13 trials with 2,800 adults who had knee osteoarthritis and extra weight. Every weight loss approach beat the control groups for weight. For pain, only diet plus exercise beat control.
The key number was 7%. The analysis suggests pain relief may come once people lose at least 7% of their body weight, whichever method they use. Europe's 2023 osteoarthritis guidance lists keeping a healthy weight and losing weight among its 8 core recommendations for hip and knee osteoarthritis.
Eating patterns themselves have thinner support. A 2023 umbrella review of 5 reviews found most of the evidence supported the Mediterranean diet for osteoarthritis outcomes such as pain, stiffness and inflammation. It found little to no evidence for specific fruits and herbs.
What about gout and psoriatic arthritis?
In gout, specific foods matter most clearly. But most of these studies watch people rather than test diets. A 2025 review of 8 studies with 47,879 people linked three habits to fewer gout flares: fish rich in polyunsaturated fat, more vegetables and staying active. High purine intake, mainly from animal foods, too much alcohol and obesity were linked to more. Europe's experts also note that people with gout or rheumatoid arthritis may be at risk of flares after moderate drinking.
For psoriatic arthritis, the evidence is thin. A 2023 review found only 8 lifestyle studies, 3 of them on diet, and none gave high-quality guidance. A separate review of 15 studies found weight loss, but not a low-calorie diet on its own, was linked to reaching minimal disease activity in psoriatic arthritis. Probiotics did not seem to help.

The bottom line
Seven pain trials in rheumatoid arthritis. A 7% weight line in knee osteoarthritis. Fewer gout flares with more vegetables and fish. Each piece points the same way, and each is smaller than the headlines suggest. An anti-inflammatory diet will not replace arthritis treatment. It is a modest lever that works best when it fits your type of arthritis. Start with your plate this week, and judge it after a few months.
Common questions
Is arthritis an inflammatory disease?
Some types are, by definition. Gout is a common type of inflammatory arthritis, caused by urate crystals building up in the joints. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory disease that affects more than the joints. Diet trials in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis also track blood markers of inflammation, and low-inflammatory diets improved those markers in a 2020 meta-analysis of 7 trials.
Does arthritis bring inflammation to the rest of the body?
In some types it reaches beyond the joints. Psoriatic arthritis is described as a multisystem inflammatory disorder, which means it affects many parts of the body. In arthritis diet trials, researchers measure inflammation in the blood, not just in the joint. A 2020 meta-analysis found those blood markers improved on low-inflammatory diets, though the evidence was very low quality.
What is the best arthritis inflammation diet?
No single diet has won. A European review of 150 studies found no high-level evidence that any one food change gives a meaningful benefit. Experts recommend a healthy, balanced diet and a healthy weight. Mediterranean eating has the most support in osteoarthritis, and in rheumatoid arthritis, several diet types lowered pain a little in small trials.
Does a vegan diet help rheumatoid arthritis?
It may ease pain a little. A 2025 meta-analysis of 7 trials found vegetarian and vegan diets gave a small improvement in pain, but no clear change in disease activity or daily function. The certainty was low for every outcome, so the authors said firm conclusions cannot yet be drawn.
